Dirt 5 – Lag /FPS Drops / Stuttering Error Fix

Dirt 5 is finally out on all major platforms. Prepare for one of the best off road racing experience . Published by Codemasters , the game looks visually stunning and plays well too. It definitely improves over its previous installment. However a game as visually stunning as this one would also be heavy when it comes to the requirements. We all know how annoying it can be if racing games start stuttering. Some of the users did complain about the optimization for this game. Turns out that the game actually lags for a lot of people . Lets see how we can actually fix these performance issues and get ourselves a much smoother game.

Dirt 5 – Lag / FPS Drops / Stuttering Error Fix

Dirt 5 is pretty heavy in terms of requirements. Ofcourse, it should be. The game has some insane amount of details and particle effects which brings down performance by a lot. But still for some users lowering the graphics settings did not work. The game would still stutter and lag making gameplay almost next to impossible. But since we do not know what exactly could be causing this lag we need to eliminate all known causes.

Is Your System good enough?

Lets start by checking if we have the right setup. Hardware is equally responsible for performance. If we do not have the right hardware we might be able to have a smoother experience. If that is the case then we must get a hardware upgrade done as soon as possible. With that being said lets check the system requirements for the game.

    • OS: 64-Bit Windows 10 (18362)
    • Processor: AMD FX 4300 / Intel Core i3 2130
    • Memory: 8 GB RAM
    • Graphics: AMD RX 480 (DirectX12 Graphics Card) / NVIDIA GTX 970
    • DirectX: Version 12
    • Storage: 60 GB available space

    • OS: 64-Bit Windows 10 (18362)
    • Processor: AMD Ryzen 3600 / Intel Core i5 9600K
    • Memory: 16 GB RAM
    • Graphics: AMD Radeon 5700XT / NVIDIA GTX 1070 Ti
    • DirectX: Version 12
    • Storage: 60 GB available space

If you are anywhere below the minimum requirements the game will not be smooth enough on your system. For the best experience you should be having the recommended setup or higher .

Have you Updated your Video Drivers ?

Having updated video drivers are equally important. The latest drivers are meant for giving us better performances in the latest games. Outdated drivers will only lower your gameplay experience. Check below to update your video drivers to the latest version.

Try making changes in the NVIDIA Control Panel (Nvidia Users Only) :

Making certain changes in the NVIDIA control panel could make a huge difference in terms of performance.

  • Right-Click on your desktop and click on  NVIDIA Control Panel
  • Click on Manage 3D settings.
  • Select Program Settings and look for Dirt 5 on the list.
  • If you do not find Dirt 5 in that list the click on Add right next to it and then click on Browse
  • Now you have to go to the installation folder and look for the .exe file . In this case it will be Dirt5.exe and select Open.
  • Set Preferred refresh rate to “Highest available”.
  • Set Maximum pre-rendered frames to 1.
  • Set Threaded optimization to ON.
  • Set Power Management Mode to “Prefer maximum performance”.
  • Set Vertical sync to OFF.
  • Click on Apply and close the window.

Try making changes in the AMD Control Panel (AMD Users Only) :

Similarly if you make changes in the AMD Control Panel (if you are an AMD user) , you could get a nice performance boost.

  • Anti-Aliasing Mode: Use Application settings
  • Anti-aliasing Method: Multi-sampling
  • Morphological Filtering: Off
  • Anisotropic Filtering Mode: Use application settings
  • Texture Filtering Quality: Performance
  • Surface Format Optimization: On
  • Wait for V-sync: Off
  • OpenGL Triple Buffering: Off
  • Shader Cache: AMD optimized
  • Tesselation Mode: Override application settings
  • Maximum Tesselation Level: Off
  • GPU Workload: Graphics
  • Chill: Off
  • Frame Rate Target Control: Disabled

Have you used the Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling? :

Hardware Accelerated GPU Scheduling is a feature introduced in the latest build for windows 10. If you have a good enough card this feature might help you get  a good boost in the performance of a game. This is how you turn it On.

  • Type Settings in the search bar at the bottom
  • Click on System
  • Select the Display on the left
  • Scroll down and find an option called Graphics Settings at the bottom
  • Click on that
  • Turn On Hardware-accelerated GPU Scheduling
  • Restart your PC

You can now set Graphics performance preference :

Graphics Performance Preference can now be set for a particular game. This would obviously help you get a good performance boost in that game.

  • Type Settings in the search bar at the bottom
  • Click on System
  • Select the Display on the left
  • Scroll down and find an option called Graphics Settings at the bottom
  • Underneath “Choose an app to set preference” there will be a drop down menu. Click on that and select Desktop app
  • Click on Browse
  • Go the installation folder of Dirt 5
  • Select the .exe file (Dirt5.exe) which is the executable file you use to start the game. This will add the .exe file.
  • Click on Options
  • Select High Performance
  • Restart your PC

Try Turning Off Discord Overlay (If you are using Discord) :

We have seen that the Discord Overlay for some reason effects the performance of a game a lot . After we have turned it off we got a drastic improvement in performance. Therefore we recommend that you turn it Off.

  • Turn on Discord
  • At the bottom where you see your username you will find 3 options – Mute, Deafen and User Settings on the right of your username.
  • Click on User Settings and on the left panel look for Overlay
  • Click on Overlay and on the top you will find an option called Enable in-game Overlay.
  • Click the switch next to it and turn it Off. Green would mean it is on.

Try Disabling the Steam Overlay :

The Steam Overlay could also effect performance of a game. Hence turning it Off is the best option

  • Launch Steam
  • On top select Library and click Home
  • From the left panel select Dirt 5
  • Right click on the game and select Properties
  • Click on General Tab
  • Uncheck the box next to Enable the Steam Overlay while in-game.
  • Restart Steam and re launch the game

Disabling the Nvidia Geforce Experience Overlay (Nvidia users) :

The Geforce Experience is a pretty cool tool for Nvidia users. You can record your gameplay , capture snapshots and all those cool stuffs. But what we tend to ignore is that the tool comes with a lot of background processes which cranks up the cpu usage . This could lead to poor performance in-game or the game may even crash. Therefore we recommend that you have it turned off :

  • Start Nvidia Geforce Experience
  • Click on the Settings icon on the top right
  • Select the General Tab
  • Turn Off In-Game Overlay
  • Restart your PC

Try Verifying Steam Files :

A lot of the times corrupted game files could lead to poor performance or random crashes. Steam allows us to verify in game files and redownload any missing or corrupted file. This is how it is done :

  • Launch Steam Client
  • On top select Library and click Home
  • From the left panel select Dirt 5
  • Right click on Dirt 5 and select Properties
  • The click on Local Files tab
  • Click on Verify Integrity of Game Files
  • It will take some time depending on the game size. You can re launch the game after it is done.

Always Update Windows :

Another thing which users tend to ignore are the windows updates. Outdated windows could very well be a cause for poor performance not only for a game but also for your whole PC. Hence make sure you always have your windows updated to the latest build.

  • Go to Update & Security
  • Click on Check for updates
  • Wait for the updates to get installed
  • Restart your PC

Re-Install the Game :

Re- installing the game is more of a last resort. If none of the above mentioned steps does not work , you can try reinstalling the game. Like I said before , corrupted files could be a reason for poor performance.  A fresh installation at times could help .

  • Open Steam client
  • On the top select Library and then click on Home.
  • From the left panel select Dirt 5 and right click on the game.
  • Now select Manage and click on Uninstall
  • After the game is removed . You have to re download it.
  • The Play button will be replaced by an Install button.
  • Click on that button to start re downloading the game again.

Hopefully these steps will help you out with any performacne issues or random crashes. If in case the issue persists then probably it could be a problem from the developers end. You have to wait for a patch fix if it is so. Enjoy the game.
