Hogwarts Legacy- Easy Combat/Dueling Guide for Beginners

Are you looking for a simple beginner’s guide to the combat mechanics in Hogwarts Legacy?

Well, you have come to the right place. This guide will help you understand how dueling works in this game.

Hogwarts Legacy- Easy Combat/Dueling Guide for Beginners

Hogwarts Legacy is perhaps one of the most anticipated games ever. People had waited for this masterpiece for ages and finally, we have it on major platforms except for the old-gen consoles where the game is set to release later on.

An open-world Hogwarts game that happens 200 years prior to Harry Potter as we know it. Even though you would not come across any familiar faces but the beautiful world is enough to keep you glued to this game for hours and hours.

The game features an extremely detailed Hogwarts school and its surrounding areas. I would not say that the map is huge but according to the devs, every place you can see from Hogwarts is a place you can reach physically in the game.

Other than exploration and storytelling, the game has a brand new combat system, unlike any Harry Potter game we had before.

How to duel in Hogwarts Legacy?

Dueling is basically a fight between two witches or wizards using their wands. In Hogwarts Legacy, you will learn a set of offensive and defensive spells that would help you immensely in a duel against an enemy wizard or any other magical creature.

How to Cast Spells in a Duel?

If you check the bottom right corner of the screen you will be able to see 4 spells. These are basically the spells you can use in a duel.

Tap R2 (PlayStation) or RT (Xbox) to cast a basic spell or basic attack that damages your enemies and reduces their life bar.

Holding down R2 or RT will expand the spell area like this:

Now you can use any of these spells by pressing any of the buttons. For example, if you press X (PlayStation) A(Xbox) here you will be able to cast Acio that pulls the enemy towards you, and then you can further cast spells on him or finish him off with basic attacks.

You can stack 4 spells in one set and up to 16 spells in total, and use them all during a fight. Press and hold R2 or RT and then right or left on the D-pad to cycle through sets of spells.

Every spell has a cooldown which is basically done to avoid you from spamming the same spell over and over again. Make combos according to the spells available to you. You would not be able to use a spell once the cooldown is on.

Advanced Offense Dueling Guide:

Protego is the basic defense spell you can use in the game. The developers made things pretty interesting by introducing the concept of colors on spells.

You could see here that your enemies have a protective bubble around them. Two of them have purple bubbles while one has a yellow or gold bubble.

Whenever you see a bubble like this around your enemy, you need to use a spell that has the same color as that of the bubble. For example, you can easily break the purple defense bubble of the enemy by using Acio which is a purple spell, that you can see at the bottom right of the screen.

Similarly, the yellow bubble could be destroyed by using a yellow spell. In this case, we can use Wingardium Leviosa which is a yellow spell.

Defense Guide in Dueling:

Defense is as important as Offense in a duel. If you cannot defend yourself you might end up losing the duel, especially if you are up against a lot of enemies together.

You can see a gold marker, like a halo around your head. This indicates that there is a spell going to be cast at you. It is like a sixth sense that lets you know beforehand.

You have to tap Triangle (PlayStation) or Y (Xbox) to deflect the spell. Press and hold the button to deflect and counter with Stupify.

If the indicator around your head is red instead of gold then it means that you are about to be hit by an Unblockable attack.

In that case, you need to dodge using the Circle (PlayStation) or B (Xbox) and a direction to avoid the attack.

Wizarding tools:

Apart from spells, you would also have an arsenal of tools at your disposal. Like, potions and plants that you grow could be used to aid you in combat.

There would be potions that help you increase your defense reducing the damage taken, or ones that help you lower the cooldown for spells. You need to assign the right potion or tool and then press L1 during the duel to consume them.

Every potion and tool has a different kind of property and utilization which when used wisely gives you an advantage over your enemies.

These are just the basics to combat. Dueling is deep and there is a lot to learn in the game. The basics are important which is why we have explained the basics to you so that it becomes easier for you to grasp the more complicated combos and mechanics in dueling.

The more you duel, the better you get.
