Update your Video drivers to the latest version:

Video drivers have a huge impact on performance. Certain games get their own driver updates which proves that updating drivers is a must when it comes to performance. Make sure you have the latest build. You can check below for the driver updates  :

Game Bar and Game Mode (Windows 10) :

The Game Var and the Game Mode are new features of Windows 10 that could possibly give you a little if not a huge performance boost. The Game Bar needs to be turned Off while we recommend having the Game Mode turned On

  • Type Settings in Windows Search Bar below
  • Click on Gaming
  • Select Game Bar from the left panel
  • Turn it Off
  • Select Game Mode from the left panel again
  • Turn in On
  • Restart your game

Try Turning Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling On :

The latest build of Windows 10 gives you Hardware Accelerated GPU Scheduling which is another feature that could help you with performance. A good video card is what you need to benefit from this feature. Here is how you can turn it On.

  1. Type Settings in the search bar at the bottom
  2. Click on System
  3. Select the Display on the left
  4. Scroll down and find an option called Graphics Settings at the bottom
  5. Click on that
  6. Turn On Hardware-accelerated GPU Scheduling
  7. Restart your PC

Set the Graphics performance preference :

Setting the Graphics performance preference could help you with performance issues for certain games. Like the other options, this can be selected for a particular game and is very effective

  • Underneath “Choose an app to set preference” there will be a drop-down menu. Click on that and select the Desktop app
  • Click on Browse
  • Go to the installation folder of Serious Sam 4
  • Select the .exe file which is the executable file you use to start the game. This will add the .exe file.
  • Click on Options
  • Select High Performance

Tweaking NVIDIA Settings (Nvidia Users Only) :

Nvidia users can try tweaking the settings under the NVIDIA Control Panel. This will also help you get a performance boost

  • Select Program Settings and look for Serious Sam 4 on the list.
  • Set the Preferred refresh rate to “Highest available”.
  • Set Maximum pre-rendered frames to 1.
  • Set Threaded optimization to ON.
  • Set Power Management Mode to “Prefer maximum performance”.
  • Set Vertical sync to OFF.
  • Click on Apply and close the window.

Adjusting AMD Control Panel Settings (AMD Users Only) :

You can try making these changes in your AMD Control Panel.

  • Anti-Aliasing Mode: Use Application settings
  • Anti-aliasing Method: Multi-sampling
  • Morphological Filtering: Off
  • Anisotropic Filtering Mode: Use application settings
  • Texture Filtering Quality: Performance
  • Surface Format Optimization: On
  • Wait for V-sync: Off
  • OpenGL Triple Buffering: Off
  • Shader Cache: AMD optimized
  • Tesselation Mode: Override application settings
  • Maximum Tesselation Level: Off
  • GPU Workload: Graphics
  • Chill: Off
  • Frame Rate Target Control: Disabled

Verify Serious Sam 4 Game Files on Steam :

Steam allows us to verify the files of a particular game. There could be a possibility that the lag is caused by a corrupted game file. Verifying and repairing the files could fix the problem. Here is how you do it :

  • Open Steam and go to Library
  • Right Click on Serious Sam 4 on the left side and click on Properties
  • Then go to the Local Files tab
  • Click on Verify Integrity Of Game Files. Wait for a few minutes. The time taken depends on the size of the game. Once the verification is done click on Play to re-launch the game

These steps should definitely help you get a performance boost. If in case you still have horrible lag and fps drops then it could very well be a problem from the developer’s end and you have to wait for performance patches.

Enjoy the Game.
