The 4-5-1 is not the most commonly used formation in a football game but could definitely work well with the correct custom tactics. The problem with this formation is that there is very little defensive stability. You can actually feel the lack of a CDM in the game.

EA FC 24- 451 (4-5-1) BEST Custom Tactics Formation
It was only until last year that they fixed the formation. Before that every player (except the defenders and the striker) would shift to the wings leaving the entire center of the pitch vacant This made it easier for your opponent to score and as a result, the formation lost a lot of its credibility.
However, now the 4-5-1 is an absolute beast of a formation with the right set of tactics:
- This is a wide formation, so any width below 50 should work fine. I am using 44 at the moment for defense and 47 for offense.
- A Depth of 64 is ideal for putting pressure on the opponent. At the end of the day, this is an attacking formation and we need to win the ball back as quickly as possible.
- I am keeping players in the box at 7 because even if you keep it on 5, all the players will rush forward. That is how the AI in this formation works. So why not take advantage of it and over-crowd the opponent’s box?
Player Instructions for the 451 Formation:
The instructions on individual players will be crucial for this formation.
- Back 4 on Stay Back While Attacking. If you are really good at tracking back and defending in general you can try and put your fullbacks on Balanced and Overlap. However, it involves a risk of getting caught on the counter.
- CM should be on Stay Back While Attacking and Stay at the edge of the box for cross.
- LM and RM should be on Come Back on Defense and Get into the box for cross.
- LAM and RAM should be on Balanced instructions with Get into the box for cross only.
- ST should be on Stay Central and Get in Behind if he is a pacey forward. If he is a tanky one then use Target Man.
I would not recommend using this formation from minute one. Even though it is more stable defensively than last year but is still not ideal for using throughout the match. Use it only if you are a goal down and you want to get back in the game. Or maybe you just want to take a lead in the match and switch back to a defensive formation after.
Overall, the 4-5-1 is extremely strong for wing play. Keep an eye on the wings and lob the ball to your wingers for a free run down the flanks. Also, you could try doing 1-2 passing between your Side CAMs and Wingers. They would stay very close to each other so it would be easier to pass.
