When we talk about the 4231, we generally refer to the Narrow variant of the formation. The compactness it provides in defense makes a huge difference. FC24 according to me is a defender’s game. If you are good at defending almost 80% of your job is done. Learning how to attack is easy and you will never really have a problem with it unless your opponent is a really good defender.
The 4231 gives you that extra bit of stability in defense which we need. The formation also works brilliantly in offense with the correct set of tactics. Here is what you need to do:
- Since we are talking about defensive stability, it is pretty evident that we are going to stay Balanced for our defense with 47 width and 56 depth.
- Direct Passing like every year is again overpowered. This year the LAMs and RAMs in the formation don’t push outside as wingers. The AI is improved and they stay exactly where you want them to be. Therefore 40 width is fine or else they would just spread too wide.
- 6 players in the box seem to work fine for both offense and defense.
Player Instructions for the 4-2-3-1:
- Back 4 on Stay Back While Attacking. If you are good at defending then put Overlap on your fullbacks. Or else just use stay back.
- For the more defensive CDM use Stay Back While Attacking and Cover Center. For the offensive one, use Get Foward only, so that he plays box-to-box.
- LAM, RAM, and CAM on Get into the Box for Cross only.
- ST on Get In Behind if he has the pace. Or else just put Balanced on everything.
The key to an incredible build-up with this formation is to wait and knock the ball around. Wait for that one player to make a run in behind the defense and you can lob it to him. Your CAM is a crucial player and needs to have great passing stats for those delivering accurate through balls and doing 1-2 passes.
If you try to rush with the 4231 you won’t be having any effectiveness in offense.
