Hogwarts Legacy- How to Fix Choppy Gameplay and Cutscenes with Low FPS

Are you struggling with horrible performance on Hogwarts Legacy?

This guide will tell you why it is happening and what you need to do in order to fix the problem.

Hogwarts Legacy- How to Fix Choppy Gameplay and Cutscenes with Low FPS

Hogwarts Legacy is undoubtedly one of the best games I have ever played. It lets you dive deep into the world of magic and experience the life of a Hogwarts student.

The game is finally out on next-gen consoles and PC and so far the reviews on this game have been fantastic everywhere. There is so much to do, so many places to explore and so many main and side missions that I do not feel there would be a point in time when I might get bored of the game.

Hogwarts Legacy has surpassed all the Harry Potter titles that came before. The game is not linked with any of the Harry Potter stories which makes it even better to play since you do not know what happens next.

Hogwarts Legacy’s Terrible Performance Issues:

The game plays fine on consoles. However, on PC it is a different story. The game is extremely choppy and the framerate is going all over the place. Choppy gameplay with frequent frame drops  and stuttering makes PC users frustrated with the game

It seems like Denuvo DRM could be the cause of the issue. I have gone through several Reddit posts and articles talking about how users with RTX 3060s and better cards are also facing horrible choppy gameplay. Cutscenes are dropping to as low as 3-4 FPS and then suddenly reaching 60 and dropping again. It does not make sense and you know it is an optimization issue when you are not even moving in the game and the frame rate keeps dropping.

If you ask me, I own an average PC and it is becoming really difficult to play this game especially after reaching Hogwarts.

Is there a FIX to this?

After doing a lot of research and practically trying out some other fixes myself, I can give you 2 fixes that could help you with the poor performance. The game badly needs a patch, to be honest. However, people with Early Access would probably have to wait till the 10th of Feb to get the first patch. Until then you can try these steps:

Fix 1:

This is what I got from a Reddit user who owns an RTX 3080 and is still having stuttering issues with the game. This fix worked for him and I guess it might work for you too.

  • Start off with a New Game.
  • Start the game and tweak the Graphics Settings according to what your GPU can handle. Make sure you get at least 40 FPS or more.
  • The game is said to work better before you reach Hogwarts.
  • So after you reach the school make sure you turn off the V-Sync in the game.
  • After that set Nvidia Latency to On+Boost and Restart the game. It seems like the Nvidia Latency helps you fix the choppiness to some extent.
  • Go to Nvidia Control Panel and enable VSync. Restart the game.
  • Make sure you restart once you Hogwarts as well.

However, this might still not work for most users. Check out the next fix.

Fix 2:

As I said before I own a pretty average PC and this fix actually helped me with performance. I found this out after hours of experimenting with settings until I understood what could actually be the cause of the problem.

Denuvo DRM is an anti-piracy technology that most games use these days to prevent the game from getting tampered with. In other words, preventing the game from getting cracked. This has often been the source of poor performance in games. However, for games like Hogwarts Legacy which is already so demanding, the performance seems to hit rock bottom with the Denuvo.

We all know cracked games are all offline. Hackers find a way to bypass the Denuvo and keep the game offline. Therefore, it could be possible that running the game offline might stop Denuvo from interfering.

I am not an expert and I do not know if this is the correct theory but surprisingly enough it worked for me. Here is what you need to do.

  • Launch Steam Client
  • Go to Library
  • Run Hogwarts Legacy.
  • Now let the game sync with the Steam Cloud.
  • The moment the game is about to launch, turn off your internet connection.
  • You will be surprised to see the difference in performance. I almost got a 25-30 FPS boost with much fewer frame drops and stuttering. The choppiness was greatly reduced and the game was actually playable for me.

My performance in Hogwarts Legacy improved drastically by using this method. Stay offline throughout your gameplay to avoid stuttering, choppiness, and frame drops. These fixes are not official and chances are it may not work for you.

These are temporary fixes and the game surely needs to get patched. If these two steps do not work for you then probably the patch will.
