Hogwarts Legacy- Won’t Launch or Start / Crashing | How to Fix

Hogwarts Legacy lets you dive deep into the magical world of witches and wizards. It is perhaps the most awaited game in 2023 so far. If you are a Harry Potter fan then you are definitely falling in love with this title.

The game features Hogwarts school like never before. The amount of detail that has been put into the visuals of this game is simply mind-blowing. You are not even bound within Hogwarts as you can explore the surrounding areas as well.

The story in this game is not at all related to any of J.K. Rowling’s books as it takes place almost 200 years before Harry Potter existed. Apart from the main story the game gives you so much to do that, there won’t be a point in time when you might get bored with the game.

The visual quality of this game is top notch which is why a lot of users are complaining about the game crashing frequently and also being stuck on a black screen when you try to launch the game. . Here is what you need to do if this is what is happening with you as well.

Step 1:

The first step is always the most crucial. Let us understand one thing if you do not have the right hardware to run this game it won’t run, as simple as that. Gone are the days when we used 3D Analyzers and other software to mimic GPUs.

So if you want to run this properly without having any crash-related issues, then make sure you have the right hardware. Here is what you need to have:

MINIMUM:

    • Requires a 64-bit processor and operating system
    • OS: 64-bit Windows 10
    • Processor: Intel Core i5-6600 (3.3Ghz) or AMD Ryzen 5 1400 (3.2Ghz)
    • Memory: 16 GB RAM
    • Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960 4GB or AMD Radeon RX 470 4GB
    • DirectX: Version 12
    • Storage: 85 GB available space
    • Additional Notes: SSD (Preferred), HDD (Supported), 720p/30 fps, Low-Quality Settings

RECOMMENDED:

    • Requires a 64-bit processor and operating system
    • OS: 64-bit Windows 10
    • Processor: Intel Core i7-8700 (3.2Ghz) or AMD Ryzen 5 3600 (3.6 Ghz)
    • Memory: 16 GB RAM
    • Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce 1080 Ti or AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT or INTEL Arc A770
    • DirectX: Version 12
    • Storage: 85 GB available space
    • Additional Notes: SSD, 1080p/60 fps, High Quality Settings

These are the System Requirements for Hogwarts Legacy according to Steam. If you are anywhere below the minimum requirements, chances are your game will keep crashing or won’t even launch. So make sure you have a configuration that is equivalent to or better than the minimum requirements to at least run the game on its lowest settings.

However. trying to crank up the graphics settings while having a system config equivalent to the minimum requirements would only result in horrible performance and the game may even crash.

Step 2:

GPU drivers always help you with performance and crash-related problems. Make sure you have updated drivers. It could be possible that the game is crashing on old drivers.

There are some essential downloads that could prevent games from launching. Make sure you have these:

if you are getting an error code “vcruntime140_1.dll missing” or “MSVCP140.dll was not found” after a crash then this would mean you do not have the latest version of  Visual C++ redistributable.

Download it from here.

Also, make sure you have the latest build of Windows. Outdated or buggy windows build could interfere with gaming and cause games to crash frequently.

  • In the desktop search bar type Settings
  • Then go to Update & Security.
  • Now select the option Check for updates.
  • Wait for any pending updates.
  • Install the updates.
  • Restart PC.

Step 3:

Make sure that the game is installed on an SSD and not an HDD. If you are still using an HDD in 2023 then it is high time you switch to an SSD. They are much faster than HDDs. Although SSDs do not give you extra FPS, they make sure your game runs smoothly and does not crash.

HDDs being slow might have trouble pulling up data quickly for games like Hogwarts Legacy which have a lot of graphical details. As a result, the game may freeze and crash. Therefore make sure to get an SSD if you do not have one yet.

Step 4:

Background applications like browsers, apps, antivirus, etc take up so much RAM that you might have performance issues. Running a lot of background apps may crank up Disk Usage which often results in games getting crashed.

Therefore turn off unnecessary background applications that you would not need while playing Hogwarts Legacy. Antivirus is the best example of why games might not launch or keep crashing frequently.

The exe file of the game often confuses your Antivirus as it considers it a malware threat and therefore blocks it. This is the main reason why most games get stuck when you try to launch them. If you do not wish to turn off your antivirus then just create an exception for Hogwarts Legacy within the application. You can also try temporarily disabling the Antivirus to avoid any crash-related problems with Hogwarts Legacy.

Step 5:

If you are using a Laptop and Hogwarts Legacy is not launching or getting crashed on startup then chances are the game is running on the integrated graphics rather than your dedicated GPU. This often is a problem with laptops as users would have to manually change them for newly installed games.

  • Type “graphics” on the desktop search bar.
  • Then select Graphics Settings
  • Go to Graphics Performance Preference and then click on the drop-down arrow.
  • Select the Hogwarts Legacy.exe file and add it.
  • Now select Options and click on High Performance.
  • This would make sure that the next time you run Hogwarts Legacy, the game would launch on your dedicated GPU.

Step 6:

There could be a lot of interruptions during the download which could lead to missing or corrupted files. Steam allows you to check for these files and re-download them to the game.

  • Launch the Steam client and go to Library and then Home
  • Select Hogwarts Legacy from the list on the left.
  • Right Click on it and select Properties.
  • Then go to the Local Files option on the left.
  • Now click on Verify Integrity of game files.

This would take a while as the game folder is scanned for any missing files and is re-downloaded and installed. However, if none of the above steps fix the problem for you then you might want to reinstall the game.

The issue could also be from the developer’s side. Normally the devs release patches to improve performance and fix problems with the game. So if that is the case then you might just need to wait for the devs to release the required patches for the game.
