How to Rank Up in Starfield?

Starfield is a game that lets you explore the vastness of the galaxy. If you are fond of space exploration this is the game for you.

It is a typical RPG that lets you grind for hours as you have hundreds and thousands of planets to discover. Some of which are habitable and some might hold resources worth collecting.

Starfield features a skill system that is quite different from the previous Bethesda games. If you are wondering how to Rank up in the game, here is just the right guide for you.

How to Rank Up in Starfield?

Leveling Up” and “Ranking Up” are terms you might be very familiar with in RPGs. In Starfield, however, these have completely different meanings. Let me explain how.

As you progress through the game, you complete missions, defeat enemies, and discover new areas. All these activities give you XP. Like any other RPG, you have an XP bar which on completion grants you a Skill Point. This is when you Level Up in the game.

Ranking Up actually refers to the effectiveness of your individual skills. In other words, when you assign a skill point to your skill tree, you unlock 4 Ranks for that Skill.  Simply leveling up and assigning skill points won’t be enough to use that skill.

There will be certain objectives or Challenges for you to complete before you actually unlock the first Rank for that skill. The objectives will be related to that skill though.

You actually Rank Up by completing Challenges related to a certain Skill.

For example, if you have assigned a skill point to Security, you would have to pick 5 locks to unlock the first Rank. This would increase your effectiveness of advanced lock picking. Similarly to get to the 2nd Rank you need to at least pick 15 locks and so on.

Therefore, Ranking up and Leveling Up are completely different terms in Starfield. You Level Up to gain Skill Points and you Rank Up to upgrade the Skills you learn.

There are 5 different Skill Trees with 4 Ranks per Skill. So you may have to work around and see what playstyle suits you best. Invest Skill Points related to your Playstyle.

There is no point investing points to a direct Combat build when you are doing Stealth most of the time. So figure out what you want first and keep focusing on objectives related to the skills you have to get even stronger.

That is all you need to know on how to Rank Up in Starfield.
