The new concept of Kameos in Mortal Kombat 1 really makes things very interesting this time around. It is more like the Tag Team mode we all wanted.
However, you do not have full control over the Kameos. Instead, you can choose from either a defensive, offensive, or combo extender move.
Most of the users generally use the Kameos for extending combos. Even though NetherRealm has adjusted the damage scaling by a lot, Kameo fighters are absolutely essential to get the most out of your combos, especially in the corners.

Not all Kameo fighters are equally effective in the game. Some of them are better for combos, while some have really good defensive moves.
For example, Scorpion will literally pull you back with his Kunai, helping you evade any attack or most importantly making your opponent whiff. This gives you an advantage in zoning your opponents. Similarly Subzero gives you an ice-armor that reduces any damage taken for a short while.

Some Kameos, keep the opponent on the ground during combo extension while some launch them further away from you. This makes a huge difference in the game. If you are good at execution you will be able to pull off those super-hard combos but the new ones would definitely struggle.
Subzero and Frost will freeze the opponent which gives you just a little bit more time to extend your combos.
There are a lot of ways you can use the Kameo fighters. It is also worth noting that certain fighters would do well with certain Kameos. For example, Liu-Kang and Sonya do really well together. Subzero and Frost are great for combo extensions.
