Mortal Kombat 1 Trailer Breakdown Analysis

Mortal Kombat 1 Trailer Breakdown Analysis- It is finally here, the new Mortal Kombat game looks more intriguing than ever. The game is called Mortal Kombat 1 as it resets the entire timeline into a completely new one created by Fire God Liu Kang.

After waiting for almost a year now and they finally revealed the game. I honestly, felt they would call the game Mortal Kombat 12 until the clock teaser arrived. The trailer looks fantastic and there are so many questions that instantly bombard your mind after you watch the trailer. This is why we are here.

Mortal Kombat 1 Trailer Breakdown Analysis

Mortal Kombat 11 was a great game indeed with a fitting end to the story. However, there seemed to be a twist at the end of the Aftermath DLC. There are two morally opposite endings to the game. One where Liu Kang emerges victorious and resets the timeline and the other where Shang Tsung manages to defeat Liu Kang and rule over all the realms.

The trailer leaves us with several questions. I will try to answer all of them and give you a complete breakdown of the trailer.

The Trailer Breakdown:

The trailer starts off with Liu Kang who talks about the new timeline that he created- “Time to wake up to a new reality, to a blank canvas that I have painted in with warmth and peace.” Liu Kang also talks about you having the choice to either live in “quiet serenity” or “bloody strife“.

Now we all know Mortal Kombat games have no room for peace. So it is pretty obvious this statement was made just for the sake of the trailer. You may have choices in the game but I highly doubt if any choice you make would lead to peace as it completely destroys the essence of Mortal Kombat.

We get to see Raiden, in his human form, training with Kung Lao. I suppose it could be the Great Kung Lao but there is still a need for confirmation here.

We also see Kitana and Mileena together. The latter always wanted some form of acceptance and maybe in this timeline, she did get what she wanted. However, the way she looked at Kitana, did not really suggest she was happy.

Hanzo Hashashi(Scorpion) and Bi-Han(Sub Zero) seem to be no longer engaged in a bitter rivalry. Maybe in this timeline, Hanzo’s clan lives on and he has no reason to take revenge on anyone.

Lastly, we get to see Shang Tsung making his grand entrance through a portal and finishing off Hanzo, Mileena, Kitana, and Kung Lao. However, he stood no chance against the Fire God and got brutally annihilated. Liu Kang then calmly poses as the Mortal Kombat logo appears.

The Plot:

You would find a lot of youtube videos saying that both the endings from Aftermath are canon. There are two separate timelines we are talking about. One that Liu Kang created from scratch and the other where Shang Tsung rules. There is a possibility that he might have invaded Liu Kang’s timeline.

However, this cannot be true.

  • If you are given a choice for an ending, only one can be canon. Liu Kang and Shang Tsung were both in the same timeline. If Shang Tsung defeating Liu is canon, there is no way another timeline would be created where Raiden is in human form and Liu is the Fire God. Hence there is no alternate timeline.
  • Shang Tsung is not wearing Kronika’s crown in the trailer. In order to invade another timeline, he needs to have the crown.
  • Shang Tsung is young in the trailer and the one in Aftermath looked old.

Therefore, we can only consider that Liu Kang’s ending is canon and there is no alternate timeline. He re-created everyone in the new timeline to balance out good with evil. Or maybe Liu Kang cannot completely remove someone from a timeline at all and his powers can only let him alter the events that took place.

Maybe he just changed the concept of the Mortal Kombat tournaments. We do not know this yet and it is pretty hard to confirm as of now. But from what we see in the trailer, I think there is no tournament. However, there is a possibility of a realm invasion.

Shang Tsung might have just decided to invade Earthrealm and take control of it. It is just hard to predict at the moment. Also, I feel that the characters who got killed in the trailer won’t be canon. Raiden died in the MK 11 trailer but he still lives. Maybe the creators just randomly decided to finish off a few characters for the sake of the trailer only.

The Possibility of Tag Team:

We see most of the characters appear in pairs which could hint at the fact that we might get Tag Team mode. Raiden and Kung Lao were seen practicing together. Mileena and Kitana would make a great team. And finally, it could not get better for Scorpion and Sub Zero fans as Hanzo and Bi-Han could team up.

However, nothing is confirmed yet and all that I am doing is taking a wild guess here.

They mentioned something about Kameo Fighters. You can choose a Kameo fighting partner who could assist you in battle. This could mean that we won’t be getting the Tag Team mode as it should be. Instead, we could have a partner and use assist moves with him to create or extend combos.

Mortal Kombat 1 would be officially released on September 19th. It might feel like a million years away but I guess it would be worth it. Also pre-ordering the game gives you Shang Tsung as a playable character.
